The Joy of Grilling with Kids

Have you ever thought about grilling with kids? Maybe you are worried about safety? If you follow our tips, it’s fun and safe, too! It’s never too early to start teaching future grill masters.

We’ve found we really appreciate the joy of grilling with kids. It’s fun, and it helps future generations of master grills, safely!

When you cook with your kids, it helps promote healthy eating habits, self-esteem and creativity. It lets kids be involved with the food they eat, and you just might find they’re more apt to try a variety of foods.

Consider the ages of your children before introducing them to any type of outdoor grill. It’s completely up to you to assess their maturity and skills and assign age-appropriate tasks. Whether they are toddlers or teens, it’s important to remember to never leave them alone with the grill. Teaching and maintaining safety is your first and foremost task.

The next time you get ready to grill on your Big Green Egg or Traeger grill, follow our tips to make it a fun and safe experience for everyone!

Teach Safety

When grilling with small children, enforce a 3-foot child-free safety area around the grill.

Jobs for the Little Kids

The small children can rinse vegetables, husk corn and help with setting the table. They can assemble ingredients for S’mores and butter buns for grilling.

Jobs for the Big Kids

Kids can help you shape and season burgers, brush chicken with barbecue sauce put vegetables and or fruit on skewers and mix salads such as pasta salads. They can also help the younger children with jobs such as folding napkins. Big kids can be in charge of bringing food to the table and clean-up.

Jobs Reserved for Tweens and Teenagers

While your teens can help with any of the above jobs, they can also chop vegetables and help grill with your watchful supervision. Teach grill clean-up!

Additional Tips

  1. Always have a working fire extinguisher nearby.Teach children how to use it.
  2. Keep a phone nearby for emergencies.
  3. Teach proper grill positioning. Grills should be ten feet away from building and fences on a level surface. Grills shouldn’t be used near low-hanging tree branches.
  4. Closely supervise the use of any lighter fluid. Demonstrate proper usage.Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flames can flashback up into the container and explode.
  5. Talk about the hot areas of the grill. This often includes the outside of the grill. Keep children from getting burned.
  6. When cooking food, use long-handled grilling tools to give plenty of clearance from heat and flames.
  7. Use a kitchen timer in the beginning so they’ll know how long to cook certain items.
  8. Show them how to use tongs and how to turn items to avoid grease splatter.
  9. Never put cooked food on the plate you used for raw meat. Teach children to wash their hands after handling raw meet.
  10. Whatever takes the longest to cook goes on the grill first.
  11. Teach proper grill clean-up as this is a vital part of the process.
  12. Never leave your grill unattended while you are cooking.
