How and When to Clean Your Pool Filter

Have you cleaned your swimming pool lately? It’s very important that you keep it clean on a regular basis. In this article, we look at how and when to clean your pool filter.

Your pool filter is an integral part of the operating system of your swimming pool. If you don’t keep your filter clean, you’re going to run into some problems.

In this article, we look at the importance of your filter cleaner for protecting and maintaining your swimming pool.

Why is It Important?

The most obvious reason is you want your entire pool to be clean, crystal clear, and inviting. This means not only keeping your tile and your surface clean and preserved but also keeping your pool filter clean.

You’ll find that over time, your filter can get dirty because of debris and chemicals. If you don’t properly clean it, your pool filter will get clogged. This means it won’t work as well.

Ultimately, you end up with poor water quality, cloudy water, and even bacteria growth. What’s more, your filter is vital for the circulation of your pool water. The filter helps spread chemicals and ensures your pool is clean and clear.

The first thing you want to consider is a regular cleaning schedule. This helps you manage your pool in the best way possible. It also helps you increase the longevity of your swimming pool and your pool equipment.

How Important is It Really?

It’s of the utmost importance. When your filter is kept clean, it makes a significant impact on the quality of your pool water. When your filter is kept clean, your pool has proper filtration. This is important so you can have and maintain safe, crystal-clear water.

Clean Your Pool Filter Regularly

Depending on the type of filter in your swimming pool, each one requires different maintenance schedules.

For example, if you have a sand filter, backwash it weekly. Use your filter cleaner at least once every pool season.

If you have a DE filter, clean it at least once every season as well.

If you have a cartridge filter, clean it weekly. You can reduce that to monthly if you don’t use your pool often. But always check it weekly so you learn when the best time is to clean your filter.

Inspect your filters regularly, especially during the summer. When the pressure hits the level specified by the manufacturer (this is usually 8-12 PSI above the recommended starting pressure of your pool filter), it’s time to clean your filter.
