6 Tips for Keeping Your Sauna Looking Great

Wondering about sauna care? Either you have a new sauna or are considering purchasing one. The good news is that you can keep your sauna looking and working great with minimal maintenance. Check out these six tips for keeping your sauna looking great.

#1: Gently Scrub Your Sauna After Use

The key here is to gently and lightly scrub your sauna. The best and easiest way to do this is to keep a handbrush in your sauna.

As a general rule, the last person to use the sauna simply dips the brush in a bucket of plain water and quickly scrubs the benches, walls, backrests, and other surfaces.

This takes less than one minute and keeps your sauna looking its best.

#2: Let Your Sauna Dry Completely

When you’re done with the brushing, go ahead and dry your sauna. First, prop he duckboards off the floor.

Then, leave the sauna door open so it can dry out. Any heat remaining in the rocks and wood helps dry your sauna completely.

#3: Clean Dirt and Stains Right Away

If you notice dirt or sweat stains beginning to develop, use the hand brush and warm water with mild detergent in it.

You can also lightly sand your benches once a year. This lightens them back to their original condition.

If mold develops in places such as the duckboard, clean your sauna with warm water and bleach.

#4: Wet Mop Occasionally

Depending on how often you use your sauna, occasionally wet mop with a liquid deodorizing cleaner such as Lysol or Pine-Sol.

#5: Don’t Use Paint, Varnish, or Stain

You don’t want to use any of these on the interior surfaces of your sauna.

The wood on the inside of your sauna needs to breathe so it can absorb and slowly release heat and humidity.

If you add artificial finishes, you make the wood surface too hot, create the possibility of fumes from the wood treatment, and take away some of the “softness” of heat and steam penetrating the wood.

#6: You Should Treat Some Parts

You want to treat your door handles and floor boards, though. They are the one exception because these parts of your sauna can get dirty easily.

Treat the handles and floor boards with a good wood sealant or polyurethane finish. Now, all your surfaces sparkle.
