8 Steps for Treating Pools with Algae

Don’t let your pool look like some of the green pools we’ve seen!

The dive pool at the 2016 Rio Olympics has been closed because of its green color. Why is it green?

Officials say it’s due to an increase in the alkaline level. Yet, others say it’s due to an algae bloom caused by heat and a lack of wind.

Whatever the cause, we want to help you keep your swimming pool a lovely color of azure blue.

In this article, we look at eight steps for treating pools with algae and recent rains.

Use Banish

If your pool is turning green, has algae spots in it or is otherwise discolored, the pool most likely has algae.

One of the best ways to get rid of algae is by using BioGuard® Algae Banish™.

Banish is a highly effective, patented, non-staining algaecide that kills all types of algae in swimming pools.  It is formulated for use in chlorine or bromine sanitized swimming pools only.  Be sure and read the important notes on the bottle before using.

Cleaning Your Pool Once Algae Has Arrived

STEP ONE:  If your pool is clear or only slightly hazy, proceed to step two.  If your pool is so cloudy or the algae is so extensive that you cannot see the bottom in areas of the pool where the water is 3 to 4 feet deep, use PowerFloc.

Follow the label directions on PowerFloc.  After completing the final step of the PowerFloc usage – vacuuming to waste – proceed to step two.

STEP TWO:  Vacuum away any debris in the pool.  Thoroughly brush all pool surfaces with a surface compatible brush.

STEP THREE:  With the pump and filter operating, apply one (1) pound of Burn Out Extreme per 7,000 gallons of pool water or one (1) pound of Burn Out 35 per 6,000 gallons of pool water.  Be sure to brush any undissolved product off any bleachable surfaces.

STEP FOUR:  Continue to operate pump and filter for one hour.

STEP FIVE:  With pump and filter operating, apply sixteen (16) ounces of Banish per 10,000 gallons of pool water, pouring the product directly into the pool in the areas of heaviest algae growth.

STEP SIX:  Keep the pump and filter operating continuously for the next 24 hours.

STEP SEVEN:  After 24 hours, thoroughly brush all pool surfaces.

STEP EIGHT:  Continue to operate the pump and filter continuously for the next 24 hours.
