Is It Time to Change Out Your Filter Media?

Is the water in your pool not as sparkling as it used to be? If so, your filter is trying to tell you something. In this article, we answer the question, “Is it time to change out your filter media?” And we look at three types: Dr. Dryden’s Activate Glass Media, Ruby Red Ceramic Media, and Silica Sand.

Whether you’re an inground pool owner or an above ground pool owner, your pool filter media plays a vital role in keeping your water clean, clear, and safe to swim in.

But, how do you know when it’s time to change it? And, how do you know which type of media is best for your pool? Read on for the answers.

Is It Time to Replace Your Filter Media?

Your filter media doesn’t last forever, and knowing when to change it can save you a lot of headaches. If you wait too long, you may end up with water clarity issues and have to spend money on extra chemicals.

So, look for these signs that it’s time to change it:

  • Your water is cloudy or green, even though it is balanced.
  • You see increased pressure readings on your filter system.
  • You notice that you are having to clean or backwash more often than usual.
  • The circulation isn’t what it used to be, or you have a weak return flow.
  • You’re having to shock your pool more often.

Generally, you want to replace your sand every three to five years. Yet, higher-performance media like glass or ceramic can last much longer and provide better filtration.

At Ultra Modern, we have three filter media choices for you. Now, let’s look at your filter media options and see how they compare with one another.

The Types of Filter Media

Dr. Dryden’s Activate Glass Media, Ruby Red Ceramic Media, and Silica Sand are all filter media options for pool filters, but they differ in filtration ability, longevity, and cost.

Glass media typically offers superior filtration, capturing smaller particles than silica sand. It often lasts longer – 10 years or more – compared to silica sand’s three to five years.

Ruby Red ceramic, also known as Ruby Sand, provides crystal clear water due to its large surface area and ability to trap smaller particles similar to glass. It can also last as long or longer than silica sand.

Silica Sand, the oldest and most common option, filters down to 20 microns and is less expensive upfront, but requires more frequent replacement. Let’s look at them further:

Dr. Dryden’s Activate Glass Media

  • Made from: Recycled glass, but highly refined and activated to reduce bacteria
  • Filtration down to: ~4 microns

Benefits:

  • Helps inhibit the growth of biofilm and bacteria
  • Requires less backwashing than sand
  • Lasts 10+ years with proper care
  • Environmentally friendly and highly effective

Best for: Pool owners who want top-of-the-line filtration, better water clarity, and lower maintenance in the long run.

Ruby Red Ceramic Media

  • Made From: High-grade porous ceramic
  • Filtration down to:  ~3–5 microns

Benefits:

  • Naturally antimicrobial surface
  • Extremely durable and long-lasting (up to 10 years)
  • Energy efficient—requires less water during backwashing
  • Designed to resist clumping and channeling

Best for: Anyone looking for commercial-grade performance in a residential setting, especially if water quality is a high priority.

Silica Sand

  • Made from: Crushed silica rock
    • Filtration down to: ~20–40 microns

Benefits:

  • Affordable and easy to replace
  • Readily available
  • Works well for basic filtration needs

Best for: Budget-conscious pool owners or those with smaller above ground pool setups where ultra-fine filtration isn’t a necessity.

Should You Make the Switch?

If you notice any of the warning signs or if your filter media is past its prime, consider upgrading to a more efficient option. Not only can high-performance media improve your water quality, but it can also reduce your reliance on chemicals and cut down your pool maintenance time.
