No one likes to say goodbye to beautiful weather, but at some point, winter will come, and you’ll want to take care of your patio furniture to preserve for the next season.

Patio Umbrellas

You probably know that patio umbrellas require some winter maintenance as for the most part, they are not made to withstand harsh Kansas winters.

Once the temps start taking a consistent dip, you should at least collapse your umbrella. Once the cold hits, and snow is imminent, it’s time to store your patio umbrella so it’s in great shape come spring.

Hammocks or Swings

Regular, old-fashioned hammocks should be taken down and stored for the winter as they can’t withstand the weather.

If you’ve got a durable hammock or swing with water resistance fabric, you can wait a while before either covering them, moving them under a covered area or storing them.

Some hammocks/swings are built to withstand the elements, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for winter.

Synthetic Patio Furniture

For the most part, this type of outdoor furniture can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at it. But, does that mean you shouldn’t protect it from the harshest months of winter?

While you don’t have to store the furniture, you might consider covering it with furniture covers or putting it under a covered area. It’s a good idea to keep the leaves, snow and any standing water off the furniture to protect it.

Wood Patio Furniture

Be sure and clean and weatherproof your wood furniture. Then, move it under a covered area, or protect it with a furniture cover.

Metal Patio Furniture

Most aluminum furniture is powder coated to keep it from rusting. You can wash your aluminum sets and apply a coat of automotive wax for extra protection.

Wrought iron furniture should be cleaned and covered for storage to keep it from rusting.

Teak Patio Furniture

If you want to maintain the color of this furniture, you can apply a specialty oil once a year. Conversely, you can let it age naturally.

Wicker

You can leave synthetic wicker outdoors year-round, but natural rattan should be kept in a dry, dark space during winter. Before storing, check it for damage and repaint any flaking areas.

Outdoor Pillows & Cushions

To discourage mildew, keep your weather-proof fabrics clean. You can vacuum them at the end of the season and wipe them down with plain soap and water. Let them dry completely and store for the winter.
