How to Use Your Hot Tub for Post Work Out Recovery

Do you workout? Does exercise take a toll on your body? Do you need a post work out recovery?

Whether you’re an avid exerciser, or you’re taking your fitness routine to the next level, hot tubs can play an integral role in helping you recover. Let’s look at how to use your hot tub for post work out recovery.

Why a Hot Tub Helps

When you soak in your hot tub, several areas of your body are triggered: your blood circulation, metabolic rate, and core body temperature.

These are some of our favorite hydrotherapy benefits.

As the hot water massage increases your blood flow, it helps speed up the processing of your lactic acid that your body produces when you exercise. Lactic acid is what makes you sore, so your hot tub can help process it faster to reduce aches and pains. In fact, the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research says when you use a hot tub after your workout, you can prevent elastic tissue damage in your body.

When to Soak After Your Workout

Timing is key when soaking after you workout. You want to get the most out of your soak while reducing inflammation in your muscles. So, wait a few minutes until your heart rate drops back to normal. This gives your muscles some time to cool down.

Here’s a good tip:

  • Ice your muscles or soak in cold water for 10-15 minutes.
  • Then, hop in your hot tub for 10-20 minutes.

This one-two punch helps you feel better the next day and reduce any muscle soreness.

Another Advantage: Soak Before Your Workout

In addition to soaking for our post work out recovery, one of our other favorite tools is soaking before we workout. We use this as our warm up routine getting our muscles ready.

We like doing this because it can help prevent injury by relaxing and stretching our muscles before starting to exercise.

Final Thoughts

We love soaking in our hot tub. It helps alleviate aches, pains, and inflammation. When we have less pain, we can workout better the next day and reach our fitness goals sooner.

As a bonus, when we soak in the evening, we are more relaxed and sleep much better!
