Things to Consider Before Buying a Grill

On the fence about buying a new grill? Wondering which one is right for you? Here are a few things to consider before buying a grill.

You might be buying a grill for the first time, or perhaps you own one grill, but you’d like to add another. This might be because you want to try out another kind of grill, or you might simply want more space for larger crowds. Whichever camp you fall in, there is a grill out there for you.

Traeger and Big Green Egg

At Ultra Modern, we love (and carry) both the Traeger grill and the Big Green Egg. What’s the difference between the two?

First, the Traeger grill burns pellets for heat. The Big Green Egg burns charcoal.

You notice the difference because of the flavor of your grilled food. Traeger’s wood-fired pellet smokers use pellets. The wood is passed through a hammer mill and pressed into a pellet shape without any glues. You can choose from different types and flavors of wood pellets to enhance your flavor.

The Big Green Egg uses charcoal, but this probably isn’t the kind of charcoal briquets you’re thinking about. The EGG uses lump charcoal. This is hardwood that’s been charred to remove wood gasses. Lump charcoal has been used for thousands of years, and is a very natural way of cooking. Like pellets, you can purchase lump charcoal in different flavors.

Do note that both lump charcoal and pellets come from hardwoods and fruit woods. Wood pellets are bit smokier. Lump charcoal burns clean and gives you a great charred finish and smoky flavor.

What to Think About Before Buying?

Now let’s look at some things to consider before purchasing a new grill.

  • Do you want to use wood pellets or lump charcoal?
  • How often will you use your grill?
  • How much cooking surface do you need? Are you cooking for two or twenty? This will help you decide how big of a grill to get.
  • Where will you store your grill. Make sure you know where you can store your grill when you aren’t using it. You also want to use it in a safe location outside that’s also convenient to the back door.
  • What options am I looking for?
  • Do you want a Kamado grill (Big Green Egg)?
  • Is Wi-Fi operation something that’s important to you (Trager)?
