Can Heat Exposure Improve Sleep?
We’ve been listening to Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Ph.D., on YouTube recently and are very interested in learning more about enhancing sleep quality through heat exposure. She has some great information about hot baths, saunas, hot tubs, and even exercise.
Heat Therapy and Sleep
According to Dr. Patrick, heat therapy (think soaking in a sauna, hot bath, or spa) may just improve your slow-wave sleep. What is slow-wave sleep?
Slow-wave sleep (SWS), also known as deep sleep, is a stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
Slow delta waves characterize it on an electroencephalogram (EEG). It’s the deepest stage of NREM sleep and usually occurs during the first hours of the night, lasting 70–90 minutes.
Slow-wave sleep is considered the most restorative stage of sleep and is associated with sleep quality and maintenance. It’s also thought to be important for memory consolidation.
So, you can see how important it is!
Dr. Patrick’s video dives into the intersection between exercise and passive body heating in sleep regulation.
