Spring has arrived! The weather’s warming up, the days are getting sunnier, and you’re probably dreaming of that first refreshing plunge into the pool. But before you break out the swimsuits, there are a few essential steps to take to ensure your pool is safe and ready for action.
It’s pretty simple whether you have an inground or above-ground pool. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be making waves in no time. Here’s how to open your pool in six steps.
Start by checking the space around your pool. Trim back any overgrown trees, shrubs, or bushes. Sweep away leaves and other debris from the pool deck. Take this opportunity to inspect your deck for any signs of wear or damage and handle any repairs now.
Don’t forget about your outdoor furniture and pool equipment—ensure items like ladders, diving boards, rails, slides, and safety gear are secure and in good condition. Now is a good time to check this as you open your pool.
Before you dive into the opening process, make sure you have all the pool chemicals and tools on hand. Here’s a quick checklist to help:
Pool Supply Checklist:
Restocking now to save time and hassle as you get your pool ready for use.
Chances are, your pool cover has gathered plenty of dirt, water, and debris over the winter.
Use a pool cover pump to remove standing water before taking the cover off. Once removed, give the cover a thorough rinse and scrub with a pool cover cleaner. Allow it to dry completely.
Pro Tip: To extend the life of your pool cover, store it in a dry, indoor location that is safe from pests and harsh weather.
Before adding water, perform a full inspection of your pool and equipment:
Note: Minor hairline cracks in fiberglass pools are normal and usually cosmetic, but a professional should address larger cracks.
Grab your garden hose and fill your pool until the water level reaches the middle of the skimmer or waterline tile (if your water level dropped0. Once filled, brush the pool’s walls and floor and remove any leftover leaves or debris from the surface and skimmer basket.
You’re nearly there! Switch on your filtration system and let it run for 12 to 24 hours to circulate the water before adding any chemicals. Be sure to use fresh test strips to check the water’s chemistry.
For best results, bring us a water sample for FREE professional testing using our ALEX system. We can guide you on adjusting pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and chlorine levels and recommend additional products such as stabilizers or algaecides if needed.
Continue filtering and vacuuming over the next few days. Once your water is clear and balanced, your pool is ready for the season!
Ongoing maintenance is key to enjoying clean, safe water. Test your pool weekly and have it professionally tested at Ultra Modern once a month or weekly during the season.
Stick to these basics:
Bonus Tip: Regularly inspect your filter and return lines for leaks or cracks. If you have a sand filter, top off the sand as needed. For cartridge filters, clean or replace cartridges to maintain optimal performance.
Now, you’re ready to kick off a fun and stress-free swim season!
