Healthy Swimming for the Summer

We live in a world filled with bacteria, and that holds true to your swimming pool as well.

And, you can bet no one wants to swim in a pool filled with bacteria, viruses, or other infectious organisms.

The reality though is that accidents happen, especially when you have a swimming pool filled with babies, children, and toddlers. So, how do you keep your pool clean?

Here’s how to have healthy swimming for the summer.

What are Recreational Water Illnesses?

Water illnesses in the pool are caused by germs. People pick up these germs by swallowing water or having contact with contaminated water. It can even be by contact with water sprays.

So, if you have a child who had an accident in the pool, everyone in your pool is at risk.

What’s more, this type of illness can be found not only in swimming pools but at water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, and more.

Crypto (short for Cryptosporidium) is one of the most common causes of recreational water illnesses in the United States. It can cause prolonged diarrhea for up to two weeks, and you want to avoid it at all costs.

Look for These Signs

There are several signs you can look for if you’re a pool owner or simply a swimmer that might indicate a recreational water illness:

  • cloudy water
  • a strong chemical smell
  • no circulation of the water

How to Swim Healthy

You’ll find some ways to help contribute to a healthy swimming experience.

  • Shower before you get in the water.
  • If you or someone in your family has diarrhea, stay out of the pool.
  • Don’t get in the water if you have an open wound.
  • Don’t change diapers by the pool.
  • Make sure everyone in the pool knows that pee and poop are not allowed in the pool.
  • Take your kids to the bathroom every hour to help them avoid going to the bathroom in the pool.
  • Never, ever swallow the water and teach your kids to avoid that as well.
